OSMOSIS DEMONSTRATION KITA simple kit for demonstrating every aspect of osmosis can be assembled wit a beaker, a retort stand. A Silform osmotic pressure capillary tube and a piece of visking tube. SE 7350 HOFFMAN VOLTAMETERFor electrolysis of water, the voltameter is manufactured with cones and sockets (14/23) at the base allowing removal of the left and right side-arms. These render the equipment less fragile during handling and storage. Each of the three glass components can be supplied as spare parts in the event of breakage. The voltameter stand (optional extra) is supplied with a bracket and cradle for mounting the apparatus . The voltameter should ONLY be used with the upper bracket supplied in the stand set as this bracket is specifically designed to prevent the outer arms rotating while in use. Two platinum electrodes are supplied with the set. The platinum terminals measure 10 x 5mm to provide a surface area of one square centimetre reaction area for rapid gas generation. Assembly Caution: The cones and sockets are prone to stress breakage from twisting action resulting from the long arms being at right-angles to the joint axis. Assembly is best achieved by assembling the stand and locking the centre arm in position first. Each side arm is then inserted into the centre arm and rotated until the upper bracket is engaged. This process should be done with the voltameter lying flat on the bench. Once assembled, the complete apparatus should be carefully lifted until the upper bracket engages with the retort stand rod. The apparatus is then lowered until the base seats in the cradle provided. Care should be taken not to twist the cones off-centre. Silform’s voltameter is specifically manufactured with 14/23 cones and sockets so that the plastic joint clips used with the micro-distillation sets can also be used with this set to provide an added precaution against rotation of the arms.

SIL 500 CHROMATOGRAPHY KITThe kit consists of a rectangular glass tank 95x130x55mm (WxHxD) and a perspex lid with a centre slot. A pack of chromatography paper to suit (SIL 510) is also supplied. A solvent with amino acids in solution is added to the bottom of the tank. A sheet of chromatography paper is suspended through the slot with the bottom just immersed in the solvent while the top is held with a pin or paper clip. Different amino acids will form colour bands or a chromagraph on the paper with the band heights correlating to the different surface tensions the amino acids created in the solution. The kit is designed for teacher demonstration, however the paper can be cut into strips and used for student participation using test tubes.
