Electrophoresis equipment supplied by Silform supports the Agarose Gel Electrophoresis of DNA (deoxyrobonucleic acid) and the SDS-Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis of Protein.

The agarose gel system uses the mini single or multi gel chamber, power supply and either ethidium bromide or methylene blue B.S. as the indicator. Efflorescence with ethidium bromide diffuses into the gel shortly after the end of electrophoresis and needs to be photographed in a dark room for further study. Electrophoresis using methylene blue B.S. does not carry the same detail as the other systems but diffuses much more slowly and can be viewed in normal classroom light. It can also be dried using the gel drying kit and stored for months for future study/tuition.

The SDS-Polyacrylamide system uses the vertical dual page chamber and power supply for the separation of proteins.
    Recommended Agarose Gel Strengths
  • 0.8% for 0.6 to 35kb fragments
  • 1.0% for 0.5 to 20kb fragments
  • 2.0% for 0.1 to 5kb fragments
  • (1% = 1gm agarose + 100ml TBE Buffer)

TBE Buffer (500ml) supplied by Silform is 5X which makes 2.5litres of 1X working solution. TBE buffer should normally be stored in concentrared form (5X) however, working solution (1X) can be stored for several months without adverse effect.
